The present study aimed at studying the effect of area (rural vs. urban), gender, social class, family type, courses of study pursued, political activism and maternal employment on the achievement motivation and career choices of college students. It was found that the achievement motivation of students was affected by the family size as students coming from the nuclear family were found to be highly motivated. Students associated with the political wings had different career choices than the others. Female students coming from both rural and urban areas chose police officer, lawyer, air hostess, computer programmer, etc. as most preferred careers.
4. Academic and Co-curricular Choices and Political Affiliation as Determined by Diversity Among the College/University Students
Investigator: Dr. Kulwant Sing Pathania, Deputy Director, UGC-Academic Staff College, H.P. University, Shimla-5.

This study was conducted in order to see how diversity prevailing among the students in the campus of college and university influences the choice of the subject, political ideology, and participant in sports and other co-curricular activities.

While analyzing academic choices among the students studying in the campus of H.P. University, it has been noted that main factors which guide the students to choose a subject at post graduate level include future career prospects of the subject, students own liking and guidance of the parents, and that of elder brothers or sisters. These factors are common for students from almost all the castes.

From the preferences of the students for various courses, it was revealed that Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) course was more popular among general category students whereas OBC students have preference for BCA course. Students belonging to SC and ST category prefer admissions in BCA course and in Medical Sciences.

As far the co-curricualr activities are concerned, painting, craft, and photography were found to be popular amongst the general category and OBC students. Further it was observed that activities like debate, declamation, and symposium are more popular among the candidates belonging to SC category.

Participation of the students of HPU Campus in the games has not been very encouraging as about 42% were not found to have interest in games and they do not participate in any game. Physical fitness, adventure and thrill are the main attraction of games for the students. Gender has been found to be deciding factor in the selection of some of the games. Whereas cricket is popular among majority of boys, girls and majority prefer table tennis and badminton.

Gender has been found to influence the political affiliation of the students. While ABVP and NSUI are found to be popular among majority of boys, SFI was popular in majority of girls. Category-wise it has been found that ABVP is much popular among the students belonging to general category whereas SFI and NSUI are popular among the students belonging to OBC, SC and ST category. These findings indicate that caste of the students has definite influence over their affiliation with different students political organizations.

Perception of the students regarding political bodies of the students in the campus varies with their residential background. Rural students are of the opinion that these bodies protect the interests of the students. Whereas the urban students feel that these bodies lead to conflicts in the institution of higher learning (colleges and universities). However, majority of the students are of the opinion that these bodies should be allowed to function in the campus to some extent.

5. Campus Life of Boarders and Day Scholars Amidst Diversity
Investigator: Dr. Kiran Rekha, Assistant Director, UGC-Academic Staff College, H.P. University, Shimla-5

Diverse background of students affects their campus life in the institution of higher learning. Both the boarder and day scholars experience the effects of diversity on their adjustment and academic achievements. A study was conducted to reveal this effect of diversity on the campus life of students of H.P. University. A questionnaire was prepared to asses the impact of regional, gender, lingual, ethnic, caste, academic and socio-economic diversity on adjustment and academic achievements of the students of post-graduation. A sample of 112 students was selected for the present study. This included 63 hostellers and 49 days scholars. Among hostellers there were 42 girls and 21 boys. Among 49 day scholars, 25 students were from the urban background whereas 24 were from the rural background. Too used for the collection of data had two types of items: (i) Yes/ No type and (ii) short answer type. Analysis of the former types of items was done through percentage analysis whereas content analysis was used to analyze the short answer type items. It was observed that the residential background of the students affect the adjustment of boarder students more. Students from rural background preferred to stay in the hostels with students of similar background. Boarder girls were found to be more conscious in this regard than the boys. It is further evident from the poor socialization of rural girls in the hostels as compared to the urban girls.

In the academics both the rural and urban students have expressed that their aim is to make tangible improvements in their academic achievements. However, among the scholars rural students were found to be more serious about their studies than the urban students.
